New Session Features Leadership Post, Key Committee Appointments

As the Senate completes the first few weeks of the 2015-16 legislative session, lawmakers have put forth a number of priorities that will need to be studied, debated and addressed in the months to come. As a member of the Senate Republican leadership team, I look forward to tackling all of these challenges and working to improve the quality of life in our local communities.

I was honored recently to be elected by my colleagues to serve as Majority Caucus Secretary. In this capacity, I will be responsible for reviewing all executive nominations submitted by the governor. Although a deluge of new cabinet secretaries, board and commission members, judicial positions and other nominations are expected to be submitted in the coming weeks by the new Administration, I am committed to giving each individual nominee a fair, thorough and thoughtful vetting.

I was also appointed to serve on six Senate committees, including as Vice Chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee. This panel studies issues pertaining to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and the Pennsylvania State Police and will be one of the main staging grounds for legislation to privatize the sale of liquor.

I will also serve on the Senate Community, Economic and Recreational Development Committee; Game and Fisheries Committee; Judiciary Committee; Rules and Executive Nominations Committee; and State Government Committee. This diverse set of committee appointments will allow me to address a wide range of issues that affect local communities.

Legislative Priorities Focus on Local Concerns

While traveling throughout the region for community events, speaking with local residents who have contacted my district offices, and interacting with people who have contacted me through my website and social media, several issues are routinely identified as priorities in local communities. The views of my constituents are one of the most important factors in setting my legislative agenda, and I appreciate all those who have shared their views on the most pressing issues for our region.

Based on my conversations with local residents, some of my priorities for the upcoming session include:

• working to pass a fiscally responsible state budget that does not overburden taxpayers,
• reviewing spending on current programs and services to improve efficiency,
• finding ways to improve critical infrastructure, enact reasonable tax policies and streamline government programs designed to attract quality employers and create jobs,
• enacting meaningful public employee pension reform that protects retirees, current employees and taxpayers,
• exploring new avenues and establishing common ground in the ongoing effort to privatize the sale of liquor,
• representing the interests of Pennsylvania sportsmen and responsible gun owners, and
• reaching a consensus on legislation that would allow the use of medical cannabis with strict parameters to prevent any potential misuse.

Concealed Carry Seminar Scheduled in Hanover

Over the past several months, I have hosted a number of concealed carry seminars to help educate local residents about state laws pertaining to firearms. Based on the overwhelmingly favorable response to these events, I plan to host another seminar in conjunction with Rep. Kate Klunk in Hanover on February 28.

The event will be held at the Republican Club of Hanover, located at 255 West Chestnut Street, from 9-11 a.m. Guest speakers will include local attorney and firearms rights advocate Matthew Menges and members of law enforcement.

The event is free and open to the public, but seating will be limited. If you would like to participate in this informational seminar, please RSVP by calling Barb Metzler at my Hanover office at 717-632-1153.
