The program will expand the options currently available for households to dispose of discontinued, expired or unwanted medications in a manner that considers public health, as well as the environment. Healthy Living Series: A1C-Diabetes ScreeningIn partnership with Pocono Medical Center, free A1C diabetes screenings will be provided at our Pen Argyl District Office on Tuesday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about a person’s average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past three months. Sometimes called the hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, or glycohemoglobin test, the A1C test is the primary test used for diabetes management and diabetes research. Appointments are necessary. Get Outdoors PA FestivalSenator Mario Scavello, DCNR Bureau of State Parks, and Lehigh Valley Greenways Partnership are hosting the Get Outdoors PA Festival on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from noon – 4:00 p.m., rain or shine, at the Jacobsburg Environmental Educational Center, 400 Belfast Road, Nazareth, PA . This is an exciting day as it is also National Public Lands Day, National Bike to Park Day, and National Hunting & Fishing Day – the perfect day for family outdoor fun! The FREE outdoor expo is designed to highlight the Lehigh Valley Greenways Partnership’s outdoor experiences. Exhibitors from the Partnership will have hands-on activities for everyone to enjoy. Children and parents can meet Smokey the Bear, Della the Mule and Woodsy the Owl and, practice archery and fishing. Light refreshments and many other activities will be available to enjoy; all free and fun! Mental Health and Substance Abuse SeminarPA Public School Building Construction and Reconstruction CommitteeA special committee is investigating ways to improve Pennsylvania's system of school building construction. The PA Public School Building Construction and Reconstruction Advisory Committee was established pursuant to Act 25 of 2016 to review and make recommendations related to the program for state reimbursement for construction and reconstruction and lease of public school buildings (commonly known as PlanCon). The Committee will hold multiple statewide hearings and must issue a report on its findings to the Governor and the General Assembly no later than May 15, 2017. Women’s Resources Hosts Butterfly ReleaseLast evening was the Butterfly Release for Peace at Women's Resources of Monroe County, Inc. With the gracious help of others, PA State Rep. David Parker was able to save one of the butterflies that became stuck. I appreciated participating with everyone who attended and pleased to see McKenzie and many others enjoy seeing all of the butterflies. The butterfly release brings awareness to the charitable mission to end domestic and sexual violence in our community and recognizes the hope and healing, freedom and remembrance of a loved one or survivor of abuse through a beautiful release of butterflies. Sponsors and attendees had the opportunity to release a butterfly in honor of their loved one. The mission of the organization is to end domestic and sexual violence for all women, children, and men in our community. They are a nonprofit, community based agency in Monroe County, Pennsylvania that provides free and confidential comprehensive support services to victims of domestic and/or sexual violence, their families and significant others; prevention education and risk reduction programs in schools and the community, and training to the professionals who work with the victims of these crimes. Summer and fall trail cam photos are being accepted for consideration. The PGC will select from a number of whitetail trail cam photo entries to be released on its Facebook page for users to pick a monthly winner, with one overall victor chosen on December 5. Learn more here. Update to State 12-Year Transportation PlanThe State Transportation Commission recently adopted an updated 12-Year Transportation Plan. State law requires the commission to review and update the 12-Year Plan every two years. No capital project can move forward unless it is included in the plan. Neighborhood Assistance Program ApplicationsBusinesses have until September 16 to apply for Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits to invest in projects that serve distressed areas or support conservation efforts.
