PennDOT Opens Route 940 Bridge in Paradise

PennDOT has announced that the bridge on State Route 940 has reopened and is now accessible to all drivers. Please be advised a bump does exist on one side of the road but will soon be removed. If you have any questions, please contact my office at (570) 620-4326.

I joined Lt. Governor Mike Stack in co-hosting a Pathways to Pardons seminar to residents in the 40th Senate District, teaching local organizations and individuals the official pardoning process.

Attendees also heard from Jamie Drake who spoke on behalf of Gary Tennis, Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Matt Franchak, Chief of Staff for the Lt. Governor, and Steve Burk, Pardons Manager with the Department of Corrections.

I was pleased to provide information to local organizations and individuals as a pardon can help those who have taken significant steps forward in their lives and society.

Senate of Pennsylvania Welcomes Six New Members

The Senate of Pennsylvania is welcoming six new members to the Senate following last Tuesday’s elections.

The new members include:

Senator-elect Sharif Street, 3rd District
Senator-elect John DiSanto, 15th District
Senator-elect Wayne Langerholc, 35th District
Senator-elect Daniel Laughlin, 49th District
Senator-elect Scott Martin, 13th District
Senator-elect Mike Regan, 31st District

Congratulations to the new incoming members. The swearing-in ceremony for new and re-elected members of the Senate will take place January 3, 2017.


Legislature Closes Out 2015-2016 Session 

The Senate and House of Representatives both convened this week to close out business prior to the end of the 2015-2016 Legislative Session on November 30 and to prepare for the start of the 2017-2018 Legislative Session on January 3, 2017.

Elections were held to fill 2017-2018 legislative leadership positions in the Senate. The following members were elected:

Senate Republican Leadership 2017-18

Interim President Pro Tempore: Joe Scarnati, 25th District (Cameron, Clearfield, Clinton, 
Elk, Jefferson, McKean, Potter and Tioga counties). The full Senate will vote on Scarnati’s nomination as President Pro Tempore when it reconvenes in January.  

Senate Majority Leader: Jake Corman, 34th District (Centre, Huntingdon, Juniata
and Mifflin counties). 

Majority Appropriations Committee Chairman:  Pat Browne, 16th District (Lehigh County).

Majority Whip: John Gordner, 27th District (Columbia, Luzerne, Montour, 
Northumberland and Snyder counties). 

Majority Caucus Chairman: Bob Mensch, 24th District (Berks, Bucks and Montgomery counties). 

Senate Majority Caucus Secretary: Richard Alloway, 33rd District (Adams, Cumberland, Franklin
and York counties).

Majority Caucus Administrator: Chuck McIlhinney, 10th District (Bucks County).

Majority Policy Committee Chairman: David Argall, 29th District (Berks and Schuylkill counties)

November Episode of Legislative Report

November 2016 - Mental Health & Drug/Alcohol Abuse

In my November episode of Legislative Report, I interview Jamie Drake, Administrator at the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission, Tiffany Rossanese, Administrator at the Northampton County Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs​, and John Christy, Monroe County Commissioner. We discuss the growing epidemic of opioid abuse and overdoses as well the programs and resources available to anyone with family or friends suffering from addiction. Since January 2015 (when I was sworn-in as Senator), more than 180 confirmed fatal overdoses occurred within Monroe and Northampton Counties. There is an immediate need for action in Pennsylvania.


Special Edition of Legislative Report

Special Edition - Integra Home Counseling

On this Special Edition of Legislative Report, I interview Linda Gerkensmeyer, Executive Director of Integra Home Counseling, and State Representative David Parker regarding the importance of consumer awareness and knowledge when buying a home as well as the state of our housing market in Monroe County. Linda and her organization help families facing foreclosure and guides homeowners through the mortgage modification and refinancing process. Between January 2013 and January 2016, more than 4,295 new foreclosures were filed in Monroe County.


Pennsylvania State Grant Program

The Pennsylvania State Grant Program is a financial assistance program that provides funding to eligible Pennsylvanians and helps them afford the costs of higher education. This is a financial aid award that you do not have to repay provided you meet the eligibility requirements. You can find out how to apply, as well as terms and conditions here.

As construction crews continue road work throughout Pennsylvania, drivers in Monroe and Northampton Counties should consider subscribing to updates from PennDOT District 5. These updates include temporary road delays due to repaving, shoulder repair, crack sealing and much more. Upcoming PennDOT road work for this week in Northampton and Monroe Counties are available. Act 89 projects, such as planned bridge replacements and road reconstruction can be found on the PennDOT projects website.

I joined PA State Rep. David Parker, PA State Rep. Rosemary Brown and PA State Rep. Jack Rader in celebrating and honoring the many veterans who have served and are currently serving our Nation in the Armed Forces.

Dr. Joseph Roy Named Pennsylvania Superintendent of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Joseph Roy on being named Pennsylvania’s 2016 Superintendent of the Year by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA) during a meeting in Harrisburg. Dr. Roy has shown great leadership in the Bethlehem Area School District, the sixth largest district in Pennsylvania.  Since the start of his tenure as Superintendent in August 2010, Dr. Roy has done a commendable job engaging with the community and stakeholders in partnerships for the benefit of the school district as a whole.


Slate Belt Chamber Recognizes Community

Congratulations to this year's community awardees recognized by the Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce - George Hinton (Business Person of the Year), Janet Farole (Volunteer of the Year), Michael Nasatka (Elected Official of the Year), and Brandon DeFranco (Student Spirit Award). Your continued commitment and service to the community is exemplary and I look forward to continuing to work with all of you.

Totts Gap Arts Institute Celebrates Anniversary

Congratulations to Totts Gap Arts Institute of Bangor as they celebrate their 10th Anniversary. And a special congratulations to its visionary co-founders, Jim and Angeline Gloria. If you have not been to the Institute or taken a class there, I would strongly encourage you to learn about their outstanding programming for art enthusiasts and aspiring enthusiasts of all ages.

Congratulations to Matthew Schipps of Troop 41 upon receiving the rank of Eagle Scout. His project at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was outstanding and we look forward to seeing what you will continue to accomplish with the skills you learned in Scouting.


East Stroudsburg Teacher Named Teacher of the Year

Michael Heely has been named the 2016 Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies for his tremendous work in teaching students at East Stroudsburg Area School District. I have worked with Michael for several years, including our work to offer students experience and understanding of the role and duties of a State Senator. Michael has promoted students’ learning through hands-on participation with elected officials at the state and federal levels and keeps his students active in the local community.

Congratulations Michael on this well-deserved award and I look forward to seeing your many future years of leadership in our community.
